Yup, Malaysia is going to celebrate her Independence day in a few days time. Selamat Hari Merdeka.

What does it mean to be a Malaysian ? We the new generation certainly have it good. We were born in a prosperous nation, we did not have to suffer as our fathers or forefathers did. WE were born in relative luxury. We could hold our heads high when we walk in foreign countries(well most of the time, there are quite a number of ignoramus here who still think that we live on trees and you’d be surprised that some of them are ASIANS, what the @!#? (The term ‘Asian’ includes people from the Asian Continent. So people from the Indian Subcontinent, The Far East and from parts of the old USSR fall under this category ) Okay I’m not going to beat to death about such fellows, those of you who are studying overseas should be very familiar with what I mentioned…unless ofcourse your university does have a large Malaysian population, which in that case you’re one very lucky person!)

Okay back to the definition of being a Malaysian. What does it mean? Here in Canada, people are really proud to be a Canadian. Most of the people here are immigrants, be it Caucasians, Asians, Pacific Islander or from Planet Pluto, all of them are proud to be a Canadian. Almost everyday you can find an advertisement which proudly proclaims ‘ A Canadian Product ‘ or ‘ Supporting Canadian …. ‘. Every single thing, believe me from beers to foods! They even have a catchy Canadian jingle at http://iam.ca . The site is actually made by a beer company but the point I’m trying to make is that here, people are truly proud to be Canadian. They hate Americans( YAY!!!!).

Now, so as the next generation of Malaysians, what is it that make us proud to be Malaysians ? Can any of you think of any ? Is it making ridiculous records like the longest Lemang or the longest sandwhich just in the spirit of Malaysia Boleh ? or is it something more intrinsic, like waking up and thanking God for being born in a peaceful and economically sound country.

Our country is not without problems, in fact there are numerous problems with it. We’re all too familiar with them. The question here is how do we tackle it. Which comes back to the first question. What does it mean to be a Malaysian ? The British were very doubtful about a country with so many races co-operating to achieve success. Are we successful ?  Yes to a certain degree.. but I believe Malaysia can be even more successful. Singapore, Korea and Japan has become very successful. Why not us. Let’s prove our detractors wrong. Let’s stand tall among GIANTS in this world. Actually, why not WE ourselves become giants.

Let’s eliminate the ugly race factor whenever a problem crops up in our country. It is difficult but let’s leave a positive lasting legacy to our future generations. This reminds me of a quote, it goes something like this, "The Earth does not belong to us, we’re merely renting it from our future generations". Playing the race card will not help the future generations or our country. Malaysia is now at a crossroad. We can traiblaze forward and leave our neighbours eating our dust or we eat theirs and get no where by getting ourselves stuck in the racial quagmire.

And what the hell has happened to our football and our badminton stars. We were so great that we were the envy of Asia and the world respectively . What happened ? I distinctively remember feeling proud when we won the Thomas Cup. When will the cup return to our homeland ? 200 years from now ? that’s way too long man. I want it to be here in the next Thomas cup! Can we achieve that? That remains to be seen.

And before I end, allow me to post the lyrics of Sudirman Haji Arshad’s Merdeka song. If anyone can send me the mp3 for this song. I’d be very thankful. Selamat Hari Merdeka!

31 Ogos

Tanggal 31
Bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh

Ramai-ramai menyambut hari merdeka
Merdeka !
Tiga satu bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Hari mulia negaraku merdeka

Hitting the proverbial Blogger’s wall

August 25th, 2005 by jsuresh

I’ve got nothing interesting to blog except on trying to be some sort of a local pundit today.

Well, here goes.

"Good evening ladies and Gentleman, Our top story for the day is the potential retirement of Datuk Seri Samy Velu, he plans to retire soon unless the Indians want him…..Cough..Cough….. Excuse me, it seems there is some phelgm stuck in my throat. Well ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know whether tears of sadness is warranted but tears of jubilation is certainly needed. After all, helming the Indians for more than 20 years can definitely be tiring and not to mention a harsh job.

I wish Datuk Seri a  joyful retirement. This ofcourse is highly doubtful as we all know how Malaysian politicians are, I guess all of you are guessing just like me that a dynasty would be put in place. Datuk Seri Lee Liong Sik already has his son to carry his torch in the party…hmm….it would only be time for Samy to do so.

Well… I don’t really follow Indian Politics back home.I’m more interested in doing other things although at times I do concern mself about the going ons in my community. Datuk Seri to his credit has done his best(IF you neglect the controversies surrounding his decisions - MAIKA, etc..etc..etc) to help the Indian community though his detractors are more than his supporters(so it seems on the internet). But then again, it’s a political minefield in malaysia….so to his credit Samy Velu has skillfully veered some really throny issues although he could have done more.

On the lighter side, Normala Shamshuddin is getting married to the Deputy Home minister. Wow, I wonder how she nailed such a person. WEll Normala, wish you all the best in your married life. If you read the newspapers you will come to know about their age and age difference. But I’m not going to comment on that as a girl’s age should be kept secret right…(or is it the weight that should be kept secret…I dunno…care to educate me girls ?)

Anything else,Hmm….been quite a hectic week. School will start in just over a week from now. I plan to volunteer in the International Student orientation. That would be cool. I just hope there are good looking girls to look at. It would be another if I can actually go upto them and talk. Well, I guess I just have to do the looking now. Malaysians are also coming this semester, I hope though they’re from the Klang Valley. No offense people, but I think Klang Valley folks are actually more open minded and they’re more knowledgable about Malaysian Indians (food we eat and the language(different dialects for different communities) we speak). Please for heaven’s sake, don’t call yourself Malaysian if you don’t know the culture of other races in Malaysia. That’s an insult to "Ibu Pertiwi".

I visited the Eastern states once when I was a bit younger and found that people from the Eastern states are very polite (and not to mention the girls are good looking too). I’ve been to the Eastern states like Terengganu and even Kelantan. All I can say is that the people there are nice. I don’t know whether they’re nice because I’m from KL, but you can really notice the difference between  West Malaysia and East Malaysia. In the East, people are friendlier and generally helpful but on the west side, cold and perhaps heartless(except to family members or close friends).  We don’t say hello, we don’t greet each other and when we buy things, we have this imperious attitude. Not good people. WE can learn somethings(actually many) from the Eastern states. Yeah we’re richer but the Eastern states like Terengganu and Kelantan can really teach us something. (I also like the dodol from  Kelantan. it’s so delicious…wait was it the dodol from Terengganu ? or Kuantan ? ) Anyway Pahang is also eastern for me…I know I know,…it’s central Peninsular Malaysia but who cares, part of it is in the east anyway.

WEll, enough rant and raves for today. Comment pls..would definitely like to hear from you gals and guys.

Finish my exam..or is it that I’m finished ??

August 12th, 2005 by jsuresh

Finished my exam and thanks Jun for your best wishes and recipes.(I’ll be sure to ask you more but at the moment just post whatever you fancy….I’ll try it out…after all it’s true and tested right :-) )

Okay…my blogging topic today.

I’m chocolately coloured and a dark person…what has that got to do with this well to those who are dark…let me tell you this…be proud of who you are.

Why let me tell you the benefit of being dark…even world experts will agree with me.
Firstly, in the malay language there is a phrase that is used to describe us,

1) Hitam manis or cokelat Manis - Now where on the world will you get such wonderful description..I tell you…this is the next best thing to slice bread. They value us…Seriously!!!!

2) In economic circles, to describe whether a company is doing well. They say

" The company is in the ‘black’ "which means the company is financially healthy.

3) Remember the old ads from Perillys when you were young. They used to say.
" Hitam itu Emas…Perillys…" Yeah..you got that right Perillys….yikes wonder how the Perillys name came about…it sounds like syphillis…okay cancelling that so that you guys will not get the WRONG idea….The point here is the "Emas" part which means Gold. So my fellow sisters and brothers….Black is gold…hear ye hear ye….the stamp of approval from Perillys….(I would fire the Perillys brand manager for suggesting such sexually prejudistic(and distasteful) name….but would give him a golden handshake for coming up with the superb tag name though.

4) Now coffee…roasted..it is dark in colour but when added with water the aroma just wasps through the air….hehehe….you see…even nature with (human ingenuity & modification) likes dark colours…

5) Oh…btw…don’t forget The Black Mamba (or is it the green mamba) Anyway….a snake with such name and such colour means one thing. "GET WAY OUTTA HERE" provided you don’t piss in your pants and thus make a fool out of yourself(especially when there are girls around you)

6) Black or dark colours means "SEXY", I personally don’t like to wear dark colours course I’m too sexy already….hehehehe…<wink wink> but see why a lambogini in dark colours or a girl dressed in dark colours would cause you to turn your head twice(well more than twice for me, The 1st, 2nd…and so on is to take a good look at them…until ofcourse they notice me looking at them which I will then stop…yeah…I’m still shy…sigh…).

I’m too tired to think of more….but be sure of one thing. God has given us a wonderful skin tone colour…Enjoy it my sisters and brothers….I’m going to get a cup of coffee now.

Brief Update

August 11th, 2005 by jsuresh

A brief update.

Exam is tomorrow. The last mile for this dreary summer lol..Please read the moral dilemma and answer it. Thanks patricia for commenting.

I may or may not update the blog for the next two-3 days and certainly would not be able to update the blog the entire next week. I have some matters to attend to next week.

Okay…take care and if you’re in Malaysia….bear in mind I am praying for you all so that the haze goes away…and why can’t our Government be tough on the Indonesians…They’re the ones who are causing the haze….Don’t see why the government has to be polite…We’re in the right…you don’t see the Indonesians being diplomatic when they’re in the right (and we’re in the wrong).

Okay..enough jabbering…to my Indonesian friends out there…no offense…sometime ofcourse I support your government and SBI is a good PM President (well from what I read in Malaysian newspapers) but sometimes…well I must criticize your government…you’re free to critisize ours.

Take care everyone.

Finally…the blog is working

August 8th, 2005 by jsuresh

Well, I finally could post again. Friendster’s support staff helped me out. Turned out my comp’s cache and possibly cookies are the culprit. So emptied them and now its working…I got some materials to post but I would like you all to check the following Moral dilemma: The scenario below is not scripted and infact an actual one as it was an exam question for my friend. My friend, U-Jun is studying medicine in Australia and with her "blessings" I’m putting this on mine. It would be interesting to see what you all have to say about this. For more wacky news items check out U-Jun’s blog. Thanks Jun! give me more materials hehehehe.

The Sheriff of Nottingham had imprisoned Robin Hood and Little John, and was gonna sentence them to death the next morning. When news got to Maid Marian, she went to see the Sheriff and begged him to let them go, promising to do whatever he wants. The Sheriff asked Maid Marian to sleep with him in exchange for the freedom of Robin Hood and Little John. Maid Marian obliges.

The next day, when Robin Hood and his friend were freed, he went to Maid Marian and asked her how did she bail them out. Maid Marian told him the truth, and upon hearing it, Robin Hood went off in a huff, telling Maid Marian he never wanted to see her again and what a whore she was. Maid Marian was heartbroken. Seeing this, Little John came up to Maid Marian and confessed that he had been loving her from afar all these years and would she mind going off with him instead?"

Interesting huh…Kindly comment. I would really like to see few comments on this. So please post. I’ll post my reply later….do post! Thanks!

Now, for the million-dollar question: Who is morally upright and who is morally corrupt? And which two characters are the "in-betweens"?

Have you ever considered this job?

August 7th, 2005 by jsuresh

This is indeed a SEX-CITING job…the job in question is what we call a “Chicken Sexer”. What you do, well determine the sex of a chick…er…not the girls but the offspring of chickens.

Hmm Apprently is not easy to determine the sex of a chick. You have to squeeze its butt(hehe Jun….i guess this is as close to an Anal Probe eh ?) and it will reveal its internal organs(besides excreting urine and faeces). You get a good salary though a 4 figure salary in RM. And it’s not an easy job mind you.

Read the news snippet below: If this news stimulates you in a positive way I repeat…positive….like intending to take up the job…not something else…

UNIQUE JOB: Precise touch of a chicken sexer
Jassmine Shadiqe

Aug 7
——————————————————————————–

Mohamad Abdul Hamid loves telling people what he does. After 13 years on the job, he still finds it funny when people react to his job description: chicken sexer.
Mohamad is the only Malaysian who is able to tell the difference between a male and female chick just days after they hatch.

He laughingly recalls how hard it was to convince his wife’s parents that he makes a decent living, when he first asked for her hand in marriage.

“They didn’t believe it was a job and that it paid well,” said the 30-year-old.

Commercial hatcheries need to know what sex the chicks are at an early age, so that they can give the hatchlings the appropriate feed and meet the needs of the chicken farms.

Egg farms don’t want males, while broiler farms — that raise chicken for meat — want to breed cockerels and pullets separately.

Cockerels are often castrated and raised as capons for meat.

Chicks of the wrong sex in any of these lines are unwanted, and culling the unwanted sexes early reduces costs.

Mohamad is one of only six chicken sexers in Malaysia, said Datuk Francis Lau, president of the Federation of Livestock Farmers’ Association.

The other five are Filipinos, hired on contract, said Lau, who is also executive director of Leong Hup Holdings Bhd which owns the Leong Hup Grandparent Stock Hatchery where Mohamad works.

Without Mohamad, the hatchery in Merlimau, Malacca, would discover the chicks’ sexes only four to six weeks later.

The hatchery is the country’s largest producer of day-old chicks.

It produces 90 million day-old chicks a year, and supplies 30 per cent of the market for these creatures.

Mohamad “does” about 700 chicks a day, or three chicks every two minutes.

He began working at the farm when he was 17, feeding chickens, then went on to help the chicken sexers. He later went for training in Medan, Indonesia.

“It’s a delicate job, and part of it is messy, but it pays well,” he said.

He earns a four-figure monthly income, he added.

What Mohamad does is called vent sexing, first discovered by the Japanese and is a difficult skill to master.

Taking a chick in one hand, he uses the other to squeeze the creature’s rear and expose the vent, the opening through which birds both excrete and urinate. The genital organ is inside the vent.

It sounds simple but the professional vent sexer has to study the organ’s external appearance, which can fall into as many as fifteen basic patterns.

“It’s a precise art,” he said. And even after 13 years, he still makes mistakes, he concedes.

I’m back

August 5th, 2005 by jsuresh

Well first and foremost, a big thank you to all of you for commenting on  my blog and visiting my profile. I hope all of you would contine to support my ahem…"stellar" literary skills and prose of wisdoms….(I’m stretching the line as far as I can my dears).

What’s new in my life..I just finished a crazy Data Structures assignment where we were supposed to test the efficiency of algorithms using Heaps(arranging it top Down and bottom up) and Insertion Sort. And we were suppose to arrange..not 1..no..not 100…and no not 10 000 but 1 freakin’ million numbers.

The heaps performed admirably…just a couple of seconds….the insertion sort method took 50 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!! ofcourse….I expected the Insertion sort to be long but not that looooooooooooonggggggggggg. I’m not going into details about the two algorithms….my head is still spinning from trying to implement the methods. I got the methods to work though….finally with loads of help from the book.

And I got 209 page views at the point of writing…That’s awesome! I really was bamboozled….(I think there was a movie …a parody …of this name). Well….I hope you guys and gals(well I finally can say I know girls…hahahahaha) continue to visit, comment and visit…..hehehehe

I was also glad to get intouch with some old friends from ADP. Haven’t had the time to message them but I will get back to them..well eventually :-) .

Adios Senors and Senorita….I think I hear Sadha calling me..got to run. Bye!

P.S: Kindly check my profile if you want to know who is this Sadha ? :-)
